About Milton, Washington
Milton, Washington had a population of 6,968 according to the 2010 census and has a total land area of 2.6 square miles. Families living in Milton earn an average of $48,166 per year, with an average per capita income of about $22,400. About 8 percent of the population lives at or below the poverty level. Milton is far less racially diverse compared to other cities in the region with 90.34% non-Hispanic White, 1.14% African American, and 2.83% Asian. The remainder of the population is made up of small minorities of Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic populations. The average family size is roughly 3 people.
The city is perhaps best known for being the home town of Jeremy Wuitschick, who took control of a school bus and brought it to a stop at the age of 13 when the driver became unresponsive. With no major industry in the city, most residents commute to larger nearby cities or work in retail and fast food establishments. Located in both King and Pierce counties, Milton is one of the smallest cities in either county. The population has grown steadily since 1910 and experienced its most significant period of population growth between 1950 and 1960, when the population doubled in a ten year period.
Milton is also home to Surprise Lake, which is located next to the Surprise Lake Apartment Complex. Located nearby are a number of schools with the same name that are part of the Fife Schools System. Located only 7 miles from Tacoma, Milton could almost be called a sub-suburb of Tacoma and, in fact, many of the people living in Milton commute to Tacoma and Seattle for employment. With a lower cost of living, Milton offers lower-cost living and easy access to large employment centers in the region.
