About Puyallup, Washington

In the 1830s and 40s, when the European settlers first arrived in what is now known as Puyallup Valley, there were around 2,000 Native Americans inhabiting the area. By the late 1800s, Puyallup began to grow rapidly. In 1890, the town was incorporated and Ezra Meeker became the first mayor. Today, the city of Puyallup has a population of more than 37,000 people. Back in the beginning of World War II, Puyallup was the site of Camp Harmony, which was a temporary Japanese American internment camp. More than 7,000 detainees, most of whom were Americans, were detained at that camp for several years without their consent.

In 1870, the population was just 312 people. The population has grown steadily since then and the population growth is largely due to a relatively strong local economy and racial diversity in the city. According to the 2000 census, the city is 87.88% White, 3.27% Asian, 1.5% African American, 1% Native American and 4.67% Hispanic. Those demographics make Al up one of the most racially diverse cities in the area. The city is also diverse in terms of age groups. 27.3% of the population of Puyallup is under the age of 18. The largest age group, men and women aged 25 to 44, make up 30.8% of the population.

One of the most interesting facts about Puyallup is that the median income for a family was $57,322 dollars in 2000. Smaller cities surrounding Puyallup, namely Black Diamond and Bonney Lake, have median family per capita incomes of over $70,000. This city is more than five times the size of Bonney Lake, yet it’s per capita it family income is lower. Why is that? Another strange fact: more than 6% of the population lives below the poverty level. That’s one of the highest percentages of people living under the poverty level in the region.
