About Auburn, Washington

Auburn was once Slaughter, Washington, named after a man by the name of Lieutenant William Slaughter who died in the 1855. Interestingly, the local hotel at that time was known as the Slaughter House. Despite its name, Slaughter was never the topic of horror movies or childhood campfire tales. In 1893, settlers moved to the city and renamed it to Auburn after their home town of Auburn, NY. In an effort to preserve the historical name of the city, some local residents attempted to petition that the newest high school, built in the 1990s, “Slaughter High School” but the local government decided that it should instead be called “Auburn Riverside High School”.

It’s interesting to note that the name change was a result of the discomfort of younger residents at the time. Residents that had been there for years understood the origin of the name Slaughter, and considered the name a memorial to Lieutenant Slaughter. Despite all of the genocide that was committed against Native Americans during those years, Slaughter – later named Auburn – was actually one of the few cities that preferred treaty over war. Thanks to that attitude, the Muckleshoot reservation was formed and remains the only Indian reservation within the borders of King County.

Like so many other suburbs of Seattle, Auburn is supported, in part, by the Boeing plant. Of course, Boeing is not the only large company in the region. It’s important to note that none of the cities are on their own in terms of the local economy. As part of the Seattle metropolitan area, Auburn receives a great deal of financial support from the thriving metropolitan economy. This is the sort of city that you would move to after making it big in a city like Seattle. It has all the appeal of a suburb and all of the economic benefits of a very large city.
