About Black Diamond, Washington
Black Diamond, like so many other cities in the area, sprang into existence as a result of the great migration to the area from prosperous mining towns at the discovery of coal. Mining operations began in the late 1880s by the Black Diamond Coal Mining Company of California. The city grew largely because workers that had mined in California were transferred to Black Diamond to work in the new mine. Originally, Black Diamond Coal Mine sold coal to San Francisco. By the early 1900s, the population had exploded to 3,500 people.
After World War 1, the mine was shut down and coal mining operations ceased within the city until the 1930s, when the a second mining boom broke out. Though the prospect of future mining operations is strong, the city relies very little on income from coal exports. Apparently, residents commute to other cities to find jobs at aerospace and high-technology companies such as Boeing.
Black Diamond is a small city. The census of 2000 reported only 3,970 local residents, though the estimate as of 2012 is just over 4000. Nonetheless, Black Diamond residents have achieved some pretty amazing things. For example, the Black Diamond Bakery achieved fame in the region back in the 1970s for the quality of the baked goods that it produced.
If you were to take Black Diamond and transport it to another region, the result would be a city full of struggling residents. There would be no jobs and the local economy would suffer greatly. Thanks to the strong economy in the Seattle Metropolitan Area, however, the local population is a commuter community. That is to say, people living in Black Diamond simply commute to Seattle and others suburban centers surrounding it.
Black diamond is a perfect example of why it’s important to have a strong regional economy. Regardless of how little opportunity a small town the offer, a strong region full of opportunity can offset that and provide a higher quality of life than would be expected in a town the size of Black Diamond.
