About Burien, Washington
With a median household income of just $53,840 per year, Burien is far from the most prosperous city in the region. Politically, much of the city subscribes to the Democratic Party. Like so many other cities in the region, Burien depends on retail and out-of-city jobs for its local economy.
Burien recently underwent several renovations including a new towncenter, a plaza/park area, and more than 400 condominiums with underground parking. Burien, like many of its neighboring cities, contracts with the King County Sheriff’s Department for its police services. Currently, 41 patrol officers, detectives, and support personnel protect this city. Burien is served by the Highline School District is home to a number of high school and elementary schools.
Burien has a council – manager type of local government and is currently served by Mayor Brian Bennett, city Manager Mike Morgan, and seven City Council members, named below: Joan McGilton, Rose Clark, Jack Block Jr., Jerry Robinson, Brian Bennett, Lucy Krakowiak, and Bob Edgar. With this style of government, most of the day to day decisions are made by the council and manager.
Burien is served by the King County Library System, which operates the Burien library. Currently, the Burien library is a 32,000 square foot facility and opened June of 2009. King County Metro also operates a public transportation service and the Burien and the Burien transit center was completed in June 2009 as well. Burien is an idyllic community, and attractive midsized town, and a racially diverse hub in King County. Once the city is able to conquer the homeless problem along with other cities in the Seattle Metropolitan Area, the city will be virtually perfect.
