About Des Moines, Washington
Des Moines is located in King County, Washington and is named after Des Moines, Iowa. F.A. Blasher recruited a few of his friends for help in developing and financing a city on Puget Sound and, because they all came from Des Moines, Iowa, they decided to name their new city after the one they had left. That was in 1887. In 1890, the population was recorded at 212 residents. By 1990, the city had swelled to more than 17,000 residents. Today, the city has an estimated population of more than 30,500 and receives three-quarters of a million visitors per year into Saltwater State Park.
Despite the enormous potential for tourism income due to its being home to Saltwater State Park, most of the residents in Des Moines earn at or below the national average per capita income. The city’s average annual household income is just $48,971 and the average single resident makes about $24,127 per year. The population is largely non-Hispanic White with significant minority populations of Asians, African Americans, and Hispanics. The average household size in Des Moines is 3 people and about 7.6% of the population lives below the poverty level.
To take the greatest advantage of its location on Puget Sound, Des Moines operates an 838 berth small boat marina. The marina was built on May 10, 1970 and later underwent an expansion in 1980 which added a 670-foot concrete/aluminum fishing pier. The marina is one of Des Moines most visible assets and offers residents an incredible view of Puget Sound, as well as boat launching for residents that want to enjoy Puget Sound more directly. Vashon Island – an island in Puget Sound 60% larger in land area than Manhattan but with a population of 1/150th that of Manhattan – is clearly visible from Des Moines but there are no bridges to connect the island with the mainland.
