About Federal Way, Washington
Though it’s not the largest city in the area, Federal Way is probably the most active in the Seattle Metropolitan Area, especially when it comes to major downtown projects. Federal Way purchased a lot that was formally used by AMC theaters back into the 2007 and began inviting proposals from a few developers in the area. The goal was to develop a multi-use tower in the downtown core. Now, this project may have been inspired by a similar multi-use development that Kent funded, commonly known as Kent Station. The contract for the project went to United Properties’ “Symphony” project. The project comprised of four 15 to 22 story towers which included a 60,000 square foot area of retail and office space and 900 housing units. The project will be relinquished to the city of Federal Way upon completion. Unfortunately, United proposed that they scrap the plan in 2009. Federal Way, not interested in building a performing arts center which was part of the suggestion, rejected the proposal.
That wasn’t the first, and it probably won’t be last developmental project that the city of Federal Way plans to put into motion. A lot of Federal Way’s growth thus far has been that the result of annexation of unincorporated King County neighborhoods. In the near future, economic growth will likely be the result of the due diligence of the Federal Way city council. The local government is very interested in creating a stronger local economy, though the economy in Federal Way is relatively strong already.
The thing that really sets Federal way apart from the cities surrounding it is the wide variety of attractions and the aggressive nature of the City Council. If ambition is any indication of how the city will grow in the near future, Federal way has a lot in store for itself, thanks to the effort and guidance of the city council.
