About Fife, Washington
Fife was officially incorporated in 1957 in response to increased traffic between Puyallup and Tacoma. Residents felt that it would be wise to establish the area as an individual community and not as simply “the area between I-5 and State Route 167”. Before its incorporation, Fife had an estimated population of less than 200 residents. Between the years 1960 and 2000, the City of Fife grew from a town with less than 1,500 residents to having more than 9,000. If it were to continue to grow at that rate, the city would have a population of more than 45,000 by the year 2050.
Though it is surrounded by communities with higher-than-average per capita income levels, the average Fife resident earns just $16,723 per year. The median income for a family in the city is about 36,250 – nearly half of what the average income for a family is in nearby Milton. Despite the lower per capita income levels, Fife has a variety of local employers, including a casino, car dealerships, and highway side businesses catering to people traveling to and from Tacoma. In spite of these businesses, more than 14% of the population of Fife lives below the poverty level.
Like most cities throughout the United States, the most common age range within the city is 25 to 44. 34.9% of the population is between these ages. 14.4% are between the ages of 18 and 24 and 25.8% are below the age of 18. 7.5% of the population is 65 years old or older. The racial distribution in Fife is as follows: 68.62% is non-Hispanic White, 4.14% is Native American, 6.5% is Asian, 6.81% is African American, 1.23% is Pacific Islander, 13.55% is Hispanic, and about 12% of the population is made up of individuals of other races.
