It’s not too surprising that Kent, Washington enjoys a relatively stable economy. As a suburb of Seattle, it benefits from the wide variety of high – technology and aerospace companies scattered throughout region. What is surprising is that Kent isn’t bursting with startup companies the way Seattle is. Perhaps the population, just fewer than 100,000, simply isn’t large enough to benefit from the trend of innovation that has made the Seattle metropolitan area one of the largest and most successful technology capitals of the world.
Kent does have something that larger cities surrounding it probably will never have: small town charm. That might sound funny to someone who has never visited Kent. After all, according to statistics, Kent is a fairly large city. What the statistics don’t show is that Kent is actually a conglomeration of small neighborhoods, each possessing its own brand of small town appeal. While the city is practically inundated by high technology, the people of Kent still feel comfortable with the title redneck – even though Kent is far from archetypical redneck country.
A lot of people would think that this is a strange paradox; this moderately sized city shouldn’t have small town appeal. For those living in Kent, it’s simply a part of life. Regardless of what modern society tries to teach us, small-town qualities are not backward. In fact, one could say that it’s a step in the right direction, that Kent should be the model upon which other cities should develop. The same could actually be said for many cities throughout Washington. It almost seems as if Washington was designed with an emphasis placed on a healthy society and an even healthier environment. It’s as close to a utopian society as we’ll ever get.
