Tukwila was incorporated as a city in 1908 and derived much of its income through agriculture and as a popular trading post to other cities. Throughout the years, the economy has developed into a thriving microcosm of the larger Seattle Metropolitan Area. The largest employer in the city, not surprisingly, is Boeing. They employ nearly 8,000 people within the city! Group Health Cooperative is the second-largest employer in the city, providing jobs for almost 2,000 residents. The next 7 largest employers in the city provide jobs to a considerable number of adults in the city, which makes the local economy remarkable stable despite a global recession.
Though many of these employers pay fair wages, not everyone in Tukwila earns a handsome salary. In fact, three of the nine neighborhoods in the city are considered low-income. Still, with its proximity to Seattle and the presence of Boeing within the city limits, the unemployment rate is well below the national average and most residents enjoy a good quality of life.
If you’re thinking about moving to Tukwila, you might want to plan a day trip and check it out firsthand. If you need a good excuse for hopping in the car and hitting the road, you can head over to the Museum of Flight, an air and space museum located in the extreme north of the city. If you prefer concerts, you could also visit the Foster Performing Arts Center in Tukwila.
One of the nicest things about Tukwila is that it’s located just 5 minutes from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. That makes Tukwila a great place to get a vacation home – whenever you feel like you need a break, you can just hop on a plane. You won’t have to worry about getting lost on your way home from the airport and a cab ride would be dirt cheap.
